Why Psychotherapy?

Overcome traumas and challenges which are causing you to suffer.

“Until you make the unconscious conscious, it will direct your life and you will call it fate”

Awareness

To state the obvious, if we are not aware of the cause of a problem then we cannot even begin to address it! So awareness is the starting point of all change. Therapy offers a non-judgemental space where you can bring your traumas and challenges into the light and safely explore and gain understanding of them and their causes. I will respect your pace throughout this process.

Integration

Therapy reduces the emotional charge of traumas and challenges and allows you to process them in a way that they can become part of your broader life story, without dominating it, a process called “integration”. Another way of saying this is that the heart is supported to heal itself.

Empowerment

Therapy supports better emotional self-regulation, a calmer more centred person. It also helps us know ourselves at an ever deeper level. These two outcomes lead to a sense of liberation and strength in the face of life’s challenges.

Why Coaching?

Achieve goals and life vision.

Coaching is about clarifying what you really want – the goals and life vision which excite you and fulfil your needs at the deepest level – honestly assessing where you are now and closing the gap using the success formula.

“I am not what happened to me, I am what I choose to become”

Why Psy-Coaching?

Balance internal and external growth.

“Each new hour holds new chances for a new beginning. The horizon leans forward, offering you space to place new steps of change”

Maya Angelou

Psy-Coaching  is a dynamic combination of psychotherapy and coaching reflecting the fact that some clients may need a blend of both of these approaches. They may need to spend some time gaining a fuller understanding of their past in addition to setting goals for the future.

An example of psy-coaching is the work that is done with a client who is building a vision for their future but recognises there is an issue in their past which is holding them back – an emotional brake that needs to be released so they can take confident steps forward.

Psy-coaching balances the internal growth of getting to know oneself at an ever deeper level with the external growth of building a life full of success and meaning.

FAQs

How do I know if this is going to work?
My practice is unique both in the combination of different approaches available to me and in the primary focus on using “evidence-based” techniques. These are approaches to therapy that have been validated by scientific research. Although I cannot guarantee your results, I promise to offer you the best possible treatment options given your particular goals and to work as hard as you are willing to work to help you achieve them.

Psychotherapy looks at issues which are deeper, complex, often unconscious, often historic, and sheds light on them, providing a safe space to process them and move forward. It focuses on understanding and healing. An example of psychotherapy is the work that is done to uncover and understand a childhood trauma, how it has affected adult life and how you can move forward past it.

Coaching is less about resolving suffering and more about looking forward and focusing on creating change or achieving specific goals. An example of coaching is the work that is done to help a client who is “stuck” in life in some way – creating a clear vision of the future that excites and pulls them forward, formulating specific, measurable and realistic steps to get there and overcoming the obstacles along the way. Coaching might focus on something as big as a client’s grand life vision or something smaller and more specific like losing weight.

Psychotherapy is slower, more exploratory and focused on the past whereas coaching is more energetic, action-focused and future-oriented. Psy-coaching has a variable pace, moving back-and-forth between the two approaches as needed.

As a rule of thumb, if you are suffering in some way this probably means a psychotherapy approach is appropriate, whereas if you are generally feeling ok and you want to achieve some goals this probably means a coaching approach is appropriate. This statement is, of course, over-simplistic.

In practice we may move back-and-forth between these approaches as needed. For example, some clients get a good handle on their historical traumas using psychotherapy work and then decide it’s time to set goals and start moving forward in their lives with the help of coaching. Some other goal-focused clients might start with coaching but might unexpectedly uncover a trauma which needs to be dealt with using more of a psychotherapeutic approach. We should not get too hung up about drawing neat boundaries between approaches. Indeed, sometimes it is a blend of approaches which is needed. What is most important is that there is a compassionate human being using their common sense and commitment to work with you on your challenges. I am in your corner.

First and foremost the work is confidential. I will do everything I can to make the environment as safe as possible. Some of the issues may be difficult to talk about or may take time to comfortably reveal themselves. I will therefore respect your pace. There is no requirement from you to talk about things you don’t want to talk about and you can, of course, pause or end the sessions at any time.

I will use all my energy, knowledge and experience to work with you on your challenges. I very much believe in supporting you to connect to your own wisdom rather than directing you with mine. I also believe in involving you in the process and openly discussing what we are trying to do and the various options open to you.

It will come as no surprise that there will be moments in these sessions that are challenging but I am sure we will have moments of lightness and humour too. As well as dealing with the negative we should make sure to celebrate the positive in life!

Each session is 50 minutes in length.
The sessions are online only. This gives busy clients the flexibility to have the sessions without leaving the office or in the comfort of their own homes. Depending on what you are comfortable with, the session can be a Zoom meeting with video, or telephone meetings without video. Also we can move back and forth between these two if you wish.
With regards to the psychotherapy part of my qualifications, I am what’s called an integrative psychotherapist, which means that I integrate techniques from the various different schools of psychotherapy rather than specializing in one narrow approach. I believe this is a healthier philosophy and approach to psychotherapy as it means we can choose the best elements from every school in our sessions.
